Borussia Dortmund have already made a bid for Ajax star, but Eredivisie champions are yet to accept.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with the signing of Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen, but will have to move quickly if they are to secure a deal as Borussia Dortmund have reportedly already tabled a bid.
Danish publication Sporten claim that the Bundesliga giants and UEFA Champions League finalists have identified Eriksen as the heir apparent to German wunderkind Mario Goetze, who will move to Bayern Munich at the start of the transfer window, and the clubs are only a few million out with their respective valuations of the player.
However, Sporten also claim Liverpool are still interested in bringing the Denmark international to Anfield, with Ajax technical director Marc Overmars confirming that Reds scouts had been to a number of the team’s matches this season.
“We have the list of scouts of foreign clubs who have been here recently, and Liverpool have been a regular visitor,” said Overmars.
“We want him to stay here for at least two more years, but the day he leaves us, he will be ready to play for the very best.
“He’s a player even the biggest clubs in the world could do with having in their squad.
Liverpool’s failure to qualify for European competition could hurt their chances, with Jurgen Klopp’s name a far more enticing one than that of Brendan Rodgers at the moment due to the flair and talent of his side’s play, as well as his personal likeability, regular supply of great quotes and the fact that his team have made a great impression on the European stage.
Dortmund’s recent success has certainly appealed to Eriksen.
“Dortmund are a club where I would like to play,” he told Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf.
“I think I would be a good fit there with the football there. Dortmund play nice, attacking football.”
Eriksen’s contract expires in 2014, and he does not intend to renew, meaning it is in Ajax’s interest to sell this summer in order to extract a transfer fee for their star man.
