Reds planning to strengthen at the back next season.
Liverpool are set to go head to head with Serie A giants Inter Milan at the end of the season in order to land highly-rated FC Barcelona defender Martin Montoya, says talkSPORT.co.uk.
The Merseysiders are already putting in place plans for the upcoming campaign as head coach Brendan Rodgers tries to build a squad capable of challenging for a top-four finish in the Premier League, and with it entry into the Uefa Champions League.
And it is the Reds’ back four that the Northern Irishman is believed to be most keen to strengthen when the transfer window reopens on June 1, especially given the fact that key veteran centre-back Jamie Carragher will be hanging up his boots come May.
Montoya, 22, has generally struggled to break into the Catalans’ first team since making his Barca debut two years ago, so much so that the right back has featured in just 22 games for the club in that time.
As a result, Rodgers feels that he may be able to take advantage of Montoya’s unhappiness at his lack of first-team football at Camp Nou by offering the Spain Under-23 international an escape route to Merseyside.
