Saints fans were unhappy with Friend after he failed to give two penalties to the South Coast club. However, the Northern Irish manager thinks that the opposition players went over too easily on both occasions, and the referee made the correct decisions.
Rodgers says, “[On the Southampton penalty appeals] The player has gone over far too easy, no way that was a penalty. I thought referee Kevin Friend was excellent and I think all his decisions were right.”
The Merseyside club won thanks to goals from Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling. The Brazilian netted with a world class strike from over 20 yards out. Whether they would have won had Southampton been given one of their potential spot kicks in the opening minute of the match is another matter.
