Rodgers set to give Mignolet to nod over over Reina next term.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to drop first-choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina in favour of new signing Simon Mignolet next season, reports the Daily Mirror.
Mignolet is due at the Reds’ Melwood training complex on Tuesday to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms ahead of a £10m switch from Sunderland, and Rodgers is prepared to give the Belgian the nod over Reina for the new season.
The Spain international has been with Liverpool since arriving from Villareal in 2005 but his form has dipped in recent season, amid of lack of quality competition for places at Anfield.
Rodgers stressed on Monday that Mignolet’s impending arrival on Merseyside will not spell the end of Reina’s Liverpool career but privately the Northern Irishman is aware that selling the Spain international would help reduce the club’s inflated wage bill.
Reina has been attracting interest from former club Barcelona this summer and is thought to earn close to £100,000-a-week at Liverpool.
Regardless of whether he remains at Anfield, Reina may have to settle for a place on the bench next term, particularly with Mignolet having made it clear he wants to play first team football ahead of a World Cup year with Belgium.
