Despite their excellent start to the term, Brendan Rodgers wants to strengthen his squad…
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has told fans he plans to buy more players when the transfer window reopens in January, he told BBC Sport.
The Reds thrashed West Brom 4-1 at Anfield on Saturday, in what was easily their best performance of the season. Luis Suarez grabbed a hat-trick, and Daniel Sturridge added a superb fourth, but the Northern Irish boss wants to add numbers at the next possible opportunity.
“We want to get through to January with the team we have, the squad we have, and keep the confidence up,” he said.
“Then we will assess it and reinforce it from there, like we did last January.”
Last January, Liverpool bought superbly, acquiring Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho for a combined fee of around £20m. Ever since, both have become integral to Liverpool, and Rodgers will be delighted if he can have an equally successful transfer window this winter.
“We will be into a time when we can reinforce the team and hopefully the players will stay fit and we will reinforce from there,” Rodgers added.
While Suarez and Sturridge have been excellent, Liverpool have little or no backup should one of them pick up an injury, and may try to sign another forward.
Elsewhere, the Reds missed out on multiple attacking midfield targets in the summer such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and could well move for a playmaker. PSG’s Javier Pastore is reportedly available, and could join the Reds to compete with Brazilian Coutinho, who is close to returning from a shoulder injury.
