Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, the favourite for the Premier League Manager of the Year award, has heaped yet more praise on his superstar captain Steven Gerrard, reports the club’s official website.
Rodgers reckons that right now, there are no better ‘controlling midfielders’ in European football than the 33-year-old.
Gerrard performed heroically last weekend against Manchester City, and gave a rousing on-pitch speech following the emotional victory.
“I think his form sometimes gets lost a bit with Steven because his leadership quality in the team is there for all to see,” Rodgers said.
“We mustn’t forget that he’s arguably the best in European football in a controlling role at this moment in time.
“You look at the holding players in European football now at the top teams; I wouldn’t swap him for any of them, because of what he can give the team.”
Gerrard will lead Liverpool out against Norwich on Sunday, knowing a win will reaffirm his side’s position at the top of the table.
The England skipper has never won a Premier League title, but has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in a transformed deep-lying playmaker role. He’s bagged 13, and registered 10 assists as well so far.
