Skilful winger Xherdan Shaqiri could be heading to Meryseyside.
Liverpool look set to continue their exciting summer transfer window with the capture of Bayern Munich’s Swiss prodigy Xherdan Shaqiri, according to The Metro.
Brendan Rodgers is willing to spend up to £20m on the 21-year-old left-footed winger, who would represent a real coup for the Reds.
Shaqiri joined Bayern’s wonderful outfit last term from FC Basel for around €11m, but through no fault of his own, has struggled for regular playing time. Although he made 26 league appearances for Bayern Munich last term, the majority of these were from the bench, and he was normally only brought on after Bayern Munich had all but secured victory.
He battled for positions with the likes of Arjen Robben, Frank Ribery, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos, and now has the incoming challenges of Mario Gotze and Thiago to deal with. This could well be too much for a young player of Shaqiri’s considerable ability – who would start for most teams around Europe.
Rodgers’ Liverpool side and Shaqiri seem like a perfect fit. Liverpool seem intent on investing in young talent with brilliant technical attributes that fit into a Rodgers’ version of Barcelona’s tika-taka system. Shaqiri ticks all these boxes, and would probably be an automatic starter ahead of Stewart Downing cutting in from the right wing. With Coutinho on the left and possibly Christian Eriksen through the middle, Liverpool would look primed for a real assault on the top-four.
Rodgers has stated that he now wishes to sign players to walk straight into his first team, and a deal for Shaqiri could be one of many exciting moves for Reds fans in what remains of the transfer window.
