Brendan Rodgers is desperate to reinforce his thin squad…
Liverpool are close to completing deals for four players, who are all expected to travel to Melwood for medicals this weekend, reports the Telegraph.
The Reds are set to sign French centre-half Mamadou Sakho from PSG for £13m, Portuguese centre-half Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon for £6m, veteran Irish Keeper Shay Given from Aston Villa for a nominal fee, and Nigerian attacker Victor Moses from Chelsea on a loan deal.
Brendan Rodgers had begrudgingly made defensive options a priority, following the retirement of Jamie Carragher, and the injuries to Sebastian Coates, Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel. The latter is not rated by Rodgers anyway, and the Reds could have to field inexperienced Andre Wisdom against Manchester United in Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash.
Sakho and Ilori are expected to arrive in Liverpool this Saturday for medicals, after the Reds had bids accepted for the talented defensive pair.
Given will sign on a short term deal as cover for the impressive Simon Mignolet, while the Moses deal could cost the Reds £2m in loan fees. His arrival is desperately needed though, as Liverpool have sold Stewart Downing and loaned Oussama Assaidi this summer, leaving them very short in the wide positions.
If this business is concluded, Liverpool could also make one last mega-move for a marquee attacking signing before Monday evening. Ukrainian flyer Andriy Yarmalenko would be the favourite, and a £20m offer has been lodged, although the Reds face competition from Italian giants AC Milan.
