Liverpool are closing in on a deal to bring Real Madrid playmaker Asier Illarramendi to Anfield, reports suggest.
Illarramendi has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid this summer, and it is reported that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is extremely keen on bringing the Spanish international to the Premier League.
According to Metro, the Reds are in pole position to sign the £16m rated star, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that Illarramendi’s move away from the Bernabeu was now ‘inevitable’.
Daily Express last week reported that Illarramendi had been rendered surplus to requirements by new Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez, but it remains to be seen if the Spaniard is willing to sell the 25-year-old to his former club.
With Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Emre Can, Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva all capable of filling the deep-lying midfielder role, Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has plenty of depth in the area without the addition of Illarramendi.
However, there’s no doubt a player of his calibre would be a massive addition to Reds midfield, especially with Lucas Leiva expected to head to the Serie A his summer.
