In one of the first big pieces of actual good news for Liverpool, a deal to bring Aston Villa scoring machine Christian Benteke to Anfield could be imminent.
According to the Metro, Liverpool have agreed to a deal with Aston Villa to make a transfer for the 24-year-old Belgian striker. Benteke finished 9th in the Premier League in goals scored with 13 – more than any Liverpool player last season. Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked to the star striker, with the Blues recently emerging as a favorite for his signature.
Though it had previously been reported that Liverpool were dropping out of the race due to the £32.5 million release clause in Benteke’s contract, Aston Villa’s recent failure to secure a new deal with their scoring machine may have opened the door for a less-expensive departure.
Benteke recorded 11 goals in his last 10 league games with Aston Villa to help the club escape relegation. He was the Premier League Player of the Month in April and was a huge part of the team’s run to the FA Cup Final. Benteke has scored double-digit league goals in each of the last four seasons and in five of the last six.
