Shakhtar’s Mkhitaryan nearing Anfield switch.
Liverpool are optimistic about signing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrik Mkhitaryan, according to the Guardian.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder scored a record 25 goals in the Ukrainian league last term and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has made the Armenian a top target as he looks to inject “an extra 20 goals” into his team ahead of the new season.
Shakhtar sold Fernandino to Manchester City for a reported £34m this week and their chief executive, Sergey Palkin, claimed last weekend that there had been no contact with the Anfield club over Mkhitaryan.
But it is now understood that Liverpool officials have been in touch with the Champions League outfit and are confident of doing a deal for the Armenia international, who scored for his country in the stunning 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over Denmark last week.
Liverpool have already agreed deals for Iago Aspas of Celta Vigo and Manchester City’s Kolo Toure, as Rodgers looks to do his business early this summer.
