Liverpool’s impending purchase of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has hit a snag as the Villa Park outfit won’t budge on the buy-out price.
According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa have held firm on the £32.5 million buy-out clause in Benteke’s contract and Liverpool are refusing to continue dialogue with the club until they budge on the price. With reports that Benteke has opted not to sign a new contract with the Villans, it could be a while before there is any progress made in a sale of the 24-year-old Belgian superstar.
Though it had previously been reported that Liverpool were dropping out of the race due to the release clause in Benteke’s contract, Aston Villa’s recent failure to secure a new deal with their scoring machine was thought to have opened the door for a less-expensive departure.
Benteke recorded 11 goals in his last 10 league games with Aston Villa to help the club escape relegation. He was the Premier League Player of the Month in April and was a huge part of the team’s run to the FA Cup Final. Benteke has scored double-digit league goals in each of the last four years and in five of the last six.
