The French defender isn’t the marquee signing supporters expected this summer.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby has blasted the boring signing of PSG defender Mamadou Sakho.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers splashed out £15 million to bring Sakho moved to Anfield for £15 on transfer deadline day and the French international was joined at Anfield by Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori.
However, Molby insists Rodgers should made more of an effort to secure a marquee player after missing out on several high-profile targets during the summer and believes the decision to strengthen at the back doesn’t make sense.
“When you kick off the season with three successive clean sheets, it’s a little bit surprising to see two centre-backs added to the squad on transfer deadline day,” He told Metro.
“Sakho might have cost £15m but he isn’t the marquee signing we’ve chased all summer.
“With all due respect, there weren’t any queues outside the club shop on Tuesday morning to buy shirts with his name on the back.
“A marquee signing is someone who gets you out of your seat like Mesut Ozil, Willian or Henrik Mkhitaryan.”
In defence of Rodgers it’s clear to see why he moved to sign two of Europe’s most promising defenders after Jamie Carragher retired at the end of last season and recent acquisition Kolo Toure picked up an injury.
