Illarramendi has been heavily linked with a move to the Reds over recent weeks, and Metro reports the Merseyside club have received a big boost in the chase for the Spaniard after Real Madrid believed to be lining up William Carvalho as a replacement.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is understood to be weighing up a £16m offer for the 25-year-old, and former Reds manager Rafa Benitez may be tempted to sell the player to make way for Carvalho.
Illarramendi has struggled for consistent first team action last season, making 30 appearances for Real Madrid in the La Liga, however, 20 of those were from the bench.
The Spanish international’s former club Real Sociedad are reported to be interested in bringing the midfielder back to the club but will struggle to reach Real Madrid’s valuation.
Rodgers is believed to be a big fan of Illarramendi and Liverpool will be able to pay the £16m required for the Spaniard’s signature, especially if the club receives anywhere near the £50m valuation for contract rebel Raheem Sterling.
