Firmino has also been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, however Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte reports that the 23-year-old is close to inking a five-year deal with the Merseyside club.
Metro reports that a £15m transfer fee will be exchanged for the player who is currently on international duty with Brazil at the Copa America in Chile.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is planning for life without Raheem Sterling with Manchester City expected to match Liverpool’s £50m valuation for the England international.
Firmino has scored 35 goals in 140 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim since joining the club from Brazilian outfit Figueirense in 2011.
Although he plays predominately as an attacking midfielder, Firmino is equally adept out wide and has also played as a striker during his time at Hoffenheim.
His versatility across the middle and front thirds have made him a much highly sought-after transfer target, but it seems Liverpool are now in pole position to land Firmino’s signature despite joining the hunt late in the piece.
