The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Villa hitman, and it seems the Midlands club are resigned to losing the star striker with The Mirror reporting Tim Sherwood is plotting a move for FC Basel man Breel Embolo.
The 18-year-old scored 17 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions last term and has already earned three caps for the Swiss national team.
Although Embolo’s capture would be a massive coup for Villa, it indicates star striker Benteke could be on his way out of Villa Park should the club reach an agreement with Liverpool over a fee.
According to Daily Star, Villa have demanded Liverpool pay the full £32.5m buyout clause for Benteke.
The Reds are believed to have baulked at Aston Villa’s asking price and could move onto other targets should talks come to a standstill.
Benteke is understood to be keen on a move to Anfield and should be force the issue Villa may have to drop the player’s valuation.
