The Reds have previously been linked to the Spain international, and Metro reports that Brendan Rodgers could make a move.
Real Madrid are believed to be happy to allow the 25-year-old to leave the club but are demanding £15m from potential suitors.
Illarramendi’s former club Real Sociedad are reported to be interested in bringing the midfielder back to the club but will struggle to reach Real Madrid’s valuation.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is believed to be a big fan of Illarramendi and Liverpool will be able to pay the £15m required for the Spaniard’s signature, especially if the club receives anywhere near the £50m valuation for contract rebel Raheem Sterling.
Illarramendi made 30 appearances for Real Madrid in the La Liga last season, however 20 of those were from the bench.
