Derby’s Hughes is set to make the switch to Merseyside.
Derby County starlet Will Hughes has been targeted by several top flight sides in recent weeks, but Liverpool finally look ready to beat Arsenal to a £12m deal, according to the Sun.
Brendan Rodgers has been a keen admirer of the 18-year-old for some time, with Hughes having played a key role in Derby’s 2013/14 campaign.
The teenager emerged from the youth academy with the Rams in the summer of 2012 and in the past two years has made 59 first team appearances.
This news will come as a blow to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who was hoping the recent success of the north London side would convince Hughes to come to the Emirates Stadium.
As it is the Reds appear to have won the race and will complete the deal for the midfielder when the transfer window opens again in January.
Hughes is versatile in the middle of the field, with the youngster’s preferred position on the right hand side, although the Englishman also has the ability to play in the centre and on the left.
With Rodgers having introduced a system at Anfield that relies on wing-backs and not wide midfielders, the England under-21 international could be asked to operate more centrally.
This is of course if Hughes makes it into the first team immediately, with established stars such as Joe Allen, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Lucas Leiva certain to be ahead of the starlet.
It could mean that the wonderkid is sent out on-loan – possibly with a return to Derby – so that the midfield ace can develop further in a less high pressured environment.
Liverpool also lining up a move for a Germany international.
