Since losing the former the Reds have struggled to replicate the form of last season, which led to them finishing second in the Premier League after a late title challenge. This time round the Merseyside club are fifth with eight games to go, and five points behind Manchester United in fourth and the Champions League qualification places.
Sterling himself could be n the brink of leaving Anfield, with negotiations over a new contract at the club dragging on. According to a separate Mirror report the 20-year-old has already turned down a £90,000 a week deal, and the Daily Mail believes he won’t even accept £180,000 a week. Were the England international to move away it would be another major blow to manager Brendan Rodgers.
The youngster said: “You really want to be working with world-class players day in, day out. It’s obviously left a little dent, these two world-class superstars leaving.”
However, he added: “I think we have good players coming through at Liverpool.”
