Now it is Man United’s rivals Liverpool who look set to sign the 27-year-old.
Brendan Rodgers has persisted with Simon Mignolet for some time, but the keeper’s continuing gaffes have made finding a replacement a necessity.

The Belgian stopper’s latest fumble came in midweek, where he allowed a simple shot to squirm away from him in the opening minutes. A Ludogorets striker was on hand to bury the loose ball.
Even if Liverpool do complete a move for Romero, they will still be forced to wait until January for the window to open.
In the meantime, Rodgers must decide whether to keep faith in the disastrous Mignolet, or risk throwing Brad Jones into the fray.
