Liverpool are planning to sign Newcastle United striker Papiss Demba Cisse in January, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Senegal international striker exploded onto the scene in England after his arrival from SC Freiburg, scoring 13 goals in his 14 games for the club having only signed in January.
This season though has not been quite so straightforward for Cisse, and he has only one Premier League goal to his name – an extra time winner that deflected off his back against West Bromwich Albion last weekend.
Liverpool clearly hope that signing for a new club ignites Cisse in the same way that it did for the Magpies, and that the striker can help their club climb up the table.
Brendan Rodgers has had mixed success in the transfer market – Joe Allen looks like he could be a quality player, especially when compared to the scandalous overspending of the previous regime, but Fabio Borini has not convinced in his role up front.
Perhaps a more established Premier League striker could be the player needed to lift Liverpool to the next level, and have them challenge for the UEFA Champions League places again.
