Surely Liverpool won’t capture this brilliant midfielder…?
Liverpool will sensationally move for Chelsea’s 25-year-old out of favour Spanish playmaker Juan Mata, reports Dave Maddock in the Mirror.
The Reds are set to loan Fabio Borini to Sunderland, and despite already bringing in Chelsea’s Nigerian winger Victor Moses on loan for the season, Brendan Rodgers has earmarked an ambitious move for Mata as his marquee summer signing.
The playmaker has been one of Chelsea’s best players for the past two seasons, but bizarrely, has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge since Jose Mourinho’s arrival. The Portuguese boss rates Eden Hazard and Oscar as his best two players in the attacking midfield positions, and has spent £33m on Brazilian winger Willian, who will surely be given a chance in the first-team.
With Spain one of the favourite for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, Mata will be desperate to play first-team football so he doesn’t fall out of favour with his national team boss Vincent Del Bosque.
Liverpool have started the season brilliantly, and sit at the top of the league following three wins from their first three games. They have very little squad depth however, and only have teenagers Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe as attacking options to support Coutinho and Iago Aspas. The latter has looked decidedly average since his arrival anyway, and fans would be delighted if reported interest in Mata resulted in a concrete offer before the window closes tonight.
