Liverpool will offer £10million plus midfielder Christian Poulsen for Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross, in a bid to solve their defensive problems, according to caughtoffside.
The Red boss Kenny Dalglish has earmarked the defence as an area that needs improving, having seen his backline come under scrutiny during preseason with 15 goals conceded in 6 games.
The Scot is aware he is in need of central defensive cover with Daniel Agger currently sidelined with an injury, while Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos’ are in the twilights of their career.
Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish has already had a £10million offer rejected by the Potters who want closer to £18million for the club skipper.
The 23-year-old has impressed with his no-nonsense approach to defending and fits into Dalglish’s policy of buying young British talent.
But the Liverpool manager’s hands are tied as he cannot improve on his original bid until he manages to sell the dead wood at the club, with Poulsen, Alberto Aquilani, David Ngog and Joe Cole all looking to be offloaded.
Dalglish will hastily put together a proposal as the transfer deadline looms, but is unlikely that Stoke will reject the deal and demand £14m plus Poulsen.
The Denmark international has rejected several offers from his homeland but has demanded he either play in the Reds’ first-team or he be sold by the August 31 deadline.
