Liverpool have reportedly pulled out of a deal to sign former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o on a free transfer as they close in on the signing of Mario Balotelli from AC Milan, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds have been keen to bring in new faces upfront this summer after the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, and Eto’o reportedly agreed to a one-year contract after passing a medical at Anfield.
However, with Liverpool set to sign Balotelli, Brendan Rodgers now sees no need to sign the veteran forward, who was seen as something of a backup plan by the Northern Irishman.
The 33-year-old Cameroon international spent just one season with Chelsea, scoring 12 goals, but is now a free agent after leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of his contract.
