Liverpool are ready to challenge Chelsea for Porto striker Jackson Martinez in January, reports talkSPORT.
The 26-year-old Colombian was linked with a move to Anfield in the summer but opted to join the Portuguese outfit, where he has dazzled with 10 goals in 11 games so far this term.
Martinez has since been linked with moves to both Chelsea and Barcelona but it is understood that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has continued to monitor his progress and is ready to meet his modest £15.8m buy-out clause in January.
With Andy Carroll on loan at West Ham and Fabio Borini sidelined for the next three months, Rodgers needs attacking reinforcements to support the in-form Luis Suarez.
Porto are desperate to keep Martinez after only landing the Colombia international from Jaguares in August but their hand may be forced if the Merseysiders meet Martinez’s buyout clause.
Liverpool will be hoping that both Chelsea and Barcelona pursue more prestigious targets in the new year, with Martinez’s compatriot Radamel Falcao said to be high on both clubs’ agenda.
