Rafa Benitez wants Napoli’s spending spree to continue with a reunion with the player whom he signed for the Reds five years ago.
Liverpool have rejected a £10m from Napoli for centre-back Martin Skrtel, according to ESPN.
Skrtel looks to have lost his place in the Liverpool starting lineup to new signing Kolo Toure, and former Reds manager Rafa Benitez has decided to test the waters with an opening bid.
Benitez, who took over at Napoli earlier this summer, originally signed Skrtel for Liverpool from Zenit St. Petersburg for £8.8m.
Skrtel found himself displaced by now-retired Jamie Carragher at the halfway point of last season due to poor form, and was left out of the team on the opening day of this season with Toure and newly-named vice captain Daniel Agger starting ahead of him.
Fourth-choice centre-back Sebastian Coates is facing a potential six-moth spell on the sidelines after tearing his knee ligaments last week whilst on international duty, meaning that Skrtel’s role as a backup is even more important at Liverpool.
Benitez has already signed former Real Madrid centre-back Raul Albiol this summer, and would be looking for Skrtel to come in and most likely push for a starting role in Napoli’s three centre-back formation – should he stay fit.
