Liverpool have targeted Anzhi’s Brazilian playmaker Willian as their star summer signing…
Liverpool have joined Manchester City and Tottenham in the race for Anzhi Makhachkala’s Brazilian playmaker Willian, reports the Sun.
The Reds have struggled to sign a big name player this window. Deals for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Diego Costa collapsed, and interest in Christian Eriksen has seemingly cooled. Brendan Rodgers has promised that the club are targeting exciting players, but if the proposed deal to sell Stewart Downing to West goes through, they will have received more money than they have spent on Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto, Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure.
Willian would cost at least £30m, after the Russian club signed him from Shakhtar in January for a similar fee.
Liverpool though, are set to take advantage of Anzhi’s new policy…
The Russians wish to change their expensive approach which saw them bring in big-money players like Samuel Eto’o and Willian himself. They are cutting their budget and plan to focus on their academy. Effectively, the entire squad is transfer-listed, meaning European clubs could snap up some of their most expensive talent, with Willian seen as the jewel in the crown.
The Brazilian is technically outstanding, and has the ability to carve open defences with clever chipped passes, zipped through-balls and the odd audacious flick. At 25-years-old, he is more than ready to move to the Premier League, which may help him add to the measly two caps he’s won for his country.
A Sun source confirmed Liverpool’s interest, and also explained how Spurs will continue to spend lavishly with the imminent departure of Gareth Bale: “It seems Liverpool are now in the picture too. Everyone knows Tottenham will have a lot of money after they sell Gareth Bale. Willian cost over £30m and there is no chance Tottenham will get him for less.”
