Liverpool sent scouts to watch Saul Niguez playing for Rayo Vallecano at the weekend, with a view to making a transfer offer in the summer, the Daily Mail reports.
The 19-year-old is currently on loan from Atletico Madrid, and is equally comfortable playing as a central defender or a holding midfielder.
Unfortunately for Niguez though, the Reds’ scouts watched him having a particularly torrid time against his parent club on Sunday evening. Niguez couldn’t cope with the physicality of Diego Costa up top. He also scored an own goal to cap off a miserable individual performance.
Niguez has been a fixture in Vallecano’s side this entire season though, and his aerial ability and last ditch tackles have impressed everyone. His concentration is discipline is arguably a weakness, but these are mental attributes that will no doubt improve as he ages and matures.
Liverpool have yet to sign anyone the January, and recently missed out on a deal to bring Mohamed Salah to the club, who was snapped up Chelsea instead. Any potential Niguez deal though would likely have to wait until the summer though, when his loan deal at Vallecano expires.
