In what could be one of the most surprising and exciting transfers of the summer, Liverpool are targeting Everton midfield dynamo Ross Barkley, reports the Daily Star.
The young Englishman has shot to prominence this season under Roberto Martinez, earning a reputation as one of the most prodigiously talented players of his generation.
Ambitiously though, Everton’s Merseyside rivals are interested in the 20-year-old, and could make an astronomical £38m for his services when the summer transfer window opens.
Liverpool apparently see Barkley as the potential heir to Steven Gerrard, with the talismanic captain approaching the latter stages of his career aged 33.
Barkley has the similar exceptional physical presence and work-rate as Liverpool’s inspirational captain, but combines these traits with superb close control and dribbling ability.
Barkley has scored five goals from 21 starts this term with the Toffees this term, including a brilliant solo effort against Newcastle a few weeks back that got the football world talking once again.
The Reds in particular appreciate Barkley’s talent, although if they were to make an offer for his services, they can expect competition from Chelsea and Manchester United for his signature.
What’s more, Barkley is a boyhood Everton fan, and Roberto Martinez’s side would be loathe to let their brightest spark join their rivals. If he were to go, it would be less painful for the Toffees faithful if the midfield dynamo moved to Chelsea or United.
The story proves though that Liverpool will look to build on their brilliant season this by investing heavily in the transfer market. Brendan Rodgers’ outfit currently top the Premier League table, and with Champions League football guaranteed next season, expect some exciting Anfield recruitment this summer.
