Reds could beat rivals to William Carvalho…

In news that will likely frustrate Manchester United fans, and possibly intrigue Liverpool supporters, Brendan Rodgers’ men could steal Portuguese sensation William Caravlho from the grasps of their rivals.
The Daily Star reports that Liverpool, and not United, as previously thought, are now in pole position for the signature of the 22-year-old midfielder.
Carvalho has starred for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal’s top division all season, which has earned him a probable starting spot at this summer’s World Cup with Portugal as a result.
Despite the fact that he’s only actually made 29 appearances for Sporting, (he was on loan at Cercle Brugge last term), Liverpool are apparently readying a £30m bid for Carvalho’s services, in order to beat United to his signature.
Carvalho has a £37m release clause, but a bid as big as £30m will surely be difficult for them to ignore.
Brendan Rodgers is adamant that he will strengthen his squad this summer, following a brilliant, but agonising Premier League season which saw his side narrowly miss out on the title to Manchester City.
Asked if Liverpool will be making additions to their thin squad, Rodgers replied, “Absolutely. We definitely need to do that.”
The Reds were scintillating going forward, but struggled defensively, and it seems as though Rodgers wants to add a physical, robust central midfielder to aid Gerrard and co. in the middle of the park – giving Liverpool a stronger defensive platform from which to work from.
Carvalho fits all these attributes. He’s tall, powerful, quick, and is physically perfect for the pace of the Premier League. He works incredibly hard, but also has the technical ability to fit into a side that prides itself on its passing and ability to retain possession.
What’s more, he’s only 22-years-old, meaning that his large potential price tag could be justified if he impresses and stays on Merseyside for many a season.
Liverpool have also made a £20m bid for Southampton and England star Adam Lallana, so it’s clear where the club feel they need to improve this summer transfer window.
