The Reds have sorely missed Sturridge since he was injured while with the England national team last month, and have lost three times in all competitions during his absence.
Reports in the Daily Mail claim that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers spoke with Hodgson earlier today, and the pair agreed that the player would not be fit to face San Marino or Estonia.
The 25-year-old will instead use the next two weeks to concentrate on returning to the Liverpool setup, which is believed to be his priority following the Reds latest loss, a 1-0 reverse at Swiss side Basel in the Champions League.
After the game, Rodgers said: “I’ve spoken to Roy today and he accepts that he (Sturridge) is not fit and he has to use the next two weeks to get fit for his club — which is the priority.”
Meanwhile, the Mail is also claiming this evening that Sturridge is closing in on a £150,000-a-week deal to keep him at Liverpool until 2019, with his 36 goals in 52 games since arriving from Chelsea set to be rewarded.
Talks had been planned for the end of last season but were put on hold due to the World Cup. The new deal will see him become one of the club’s highest paid players.
