England star seemed to admit that he was more interested in playing for the Reds.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge was forced to defend himself on twitter after becoming embroiled in a club v country row.
Sturridge enraged supporters after claiming in an interview with the Anfield club’s official website that playing for the Reds mattered more to him than representing England, with his comments coming just hours before the critical World Cup qualifier with Ukraine.
“I’m more worried about Liverpool and more worried about putting in good performances for us, us winning games and challenging for trophies,” the 24-year-old said.
“That’s my main ambition – it’s not about playing for England. That comes with doing the things you do for your club and if I don’t play well here, I won’t get the opportunity to do it there [World Cup finals].”
Three Lions star’s near-340,000 followers quickly turned on him leading to Sturridge, ruled out of tonight’s match with a thigh injury, to set the record straight on the social networking site.
Don’t get it twisted…. England is the pinnacle. To play for them is a dream come true. Just hoping to recover for Monday #Godisgood

Some people never understand. Read the interview. If I do well for my club I will play for England. If I’m not fit I can’t play…
