The enigmatic Uruguayan has been named on the shortlist for the award, but doesn’t think he’ll win it!
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez reckons that Bayern Munich’s French winger Franck Ribery deserves to win the coveted Ballon D’or, awarded for the best player in world football 2013.
Suarez is among 23 superstars named on the shortlist for the award, that will be announced at the end of the calendar year.
“Based on last year’s performances, Ribery deserves it after his incredible treble with Bayern Munich,” Suarez told French radio station RMC.
The Frenchman has been sublime throughout 2013. Not only was a key member of the treble-winning team, but he’s started this term where he left the last, scoring six goals and assisting six more already.
Suarez did concede though that because of their wonderful goal-scoring records, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo have equally good chances of winning it.
“But Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi have a good case as well following all their goals. They have some spectacular statistics,” the Uruguayan admitted.
Between them, Ronaldo and Messi have already scored nearly 30 goals this season, and the Portuguese flyer will be desperate to win the award after having to see his diminutive Argentine rival pick up the Ballon D’or four times in a row.
“Regardless of who will win it, he [Ribery] deserves it,” Suarez continued.
Perhaps if the Liverpool man earns the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League, his chances of winning the award himself one day will improve.
