The Reds have been heavily linked with the Croatian starlet as a replacement for the outgoing Steven Gerrard, but Tuttosport [via Daily Star] reports Juventus have held “secret meetings” with Inter Milan.
Juventus reportedly sent officials to Milan to negotiate a deal for the 21-year-old, with a fee thought to be in the region of £21m.
Kovacic is rated as one of Europe’s brightest talents and Juventus’ interest will come as a hammer blow for Liverpool, who at one stage were believed to be in the box seat to snare the former Dinamo Zagreb man’s signature.
According to Daily Express, Liverpool are now expected to turn its full attention to £15m-rated Real Madrid playmaker Asier Illarramendi.
Illarramendi has struggled for playing time at the Bernabeu after joining the club from Real Sociedad in 2013.
