The 23-year-old international had been a first team regular for Schalke last season until last season when injury robbed him of a place at the World Cup with Greece.
He linked up with fellow Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen on a season long loan last August in a bid to regain fitness and form, and he has so far made 15 appearances for his side, scoring three goals in the process.
And he may now be available for a cut price fee as he is set to enter the final year of his contract with Schalke.
That means his market value has dropped to just £7m, and with Liverpool suffering through a series of mishaps at the back this term Brendan Rodgers may be more than tempted to make a move.
