Reds to swoop for 107-time international defender.
Liverpool are planning to lodge a late bid to sign former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, according to the Daily Mail.
The 33-year-old left-back, who is a free agent after being released by Chelsea this summer, is on the verge of agreeing a move to Serie A runners up AS Roma.
However, Liverpool want to hijack Roma’s move for Cole by offering the experienced Englishman a stay in the Premier League.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers already has a wealth of English talent in his first team at Anfield.
The Reds currently have seven members of England’s 23-man squad that went to the 2014 FIFA World Cup – Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert.
Cole has been capped 107 times by England at senior level, but he was not named in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup party – an omission that led to him retiring from international football.
