Liverpool and Tottenham are set to go head-to-head in the race for the signature of Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, reports suggest.
The Spanish international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer, however, The Guardian reports Tottenham are interested in the 25-year-old.
Illarramendi has understood to have been told by Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez he is surplus to requirements this season after he made just 10 La Liga starts last term.
The signing of Croatian ace Mateo Kovacic is expected to send him even further down the pecking order at the Bernabeu, and an exit looks likely.
Illarramendi’s former club Real Sociedad are also understood to be keen in signing the defensive midfielder, but it is reported the club does not have the financial clout to compete with the Premier League duo.
Real Sociedad could be keen to bring in the £15-rated player on loan, however, he would be a massive addition to either Liverpool or Tottenham and it remains to be seen if he will remain in Spain or make the move to the Premier League.
