The Reds manager hasn’t given up hope on Basel’s Salah.
Chelsea appeared to have stolen the march on Liverpool on Thursday by agreeing an £11m deal with FC Basel for Mohamed Salah, but Brendan Rodgers says the Reds are still in the race.
The Merseyside club were the leading candidates to secure a move for the Egypt international, before the Blues came in at the last minute and tied up the switch.
Salah now has to complete a medical and agree personal terms at Stamford Bridge, but Rodgers says that a move to Anfield can still happen.
“I’m not sure whether that deal is definitely done yet or not,” the Northern Irishman told talkSPORT.
“The young guy is a good player. We have tracked him for a number of months, the club has been watching him and I have been to watch him.
“It is one where the agent of the player and the clubs were talking but if the deal can’t be done, the deal can’t be done.”
Unfortunately for Rodgers, if the 21-year-old does make the move to west London as expected then these comments will only serve to undermine the 40-year-old’s club.
This is not the first time that Chelsea have sneaked ahead of Liverpool in the transfer market, having done a similar thing in the summer with Willian.
Rodgers had identified Salah as the ideal candidate to come in and bolster a small squad, with the winger having impressed in Switzerland over the past 18 months.
The youngster is known as the ‘Egyptian Messi’ and has scored 17 goals in 27 games for the national team.
