Rodgers is keen on Atletico’s youngster Niguez.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is ready to raid La Liga once again and will compete with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United for Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez, reports the Mirror.
The 19-year-old has been making a big impression in Spain, where the midfielder has been playing on-loan at fellow top flight side Rayo Vallecano.
Rodgers has had discussions with Niguez’s father – Luis Antonio – about a deadline day move, although the Gunners have also met with him over a proposed transfer.
After missing out on Mohamed Salah, who looked like he was going to join the Reds before the Blues sneaked in at the 11th hour and snapped up the Egyptian in an £11m switch, the Merseysiders are becoming desperate for support.
This has been made even more urgent by the news that defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva will be out of action for two months with a knee injury.
Niguez has the capability to play in the same role as Lucas and even as a centre-back and this is why Rodgers has stepped up the interest in the Spain under-21 international.
The youngster’s release clause is set at £20m, but the Northern Irishman is hoping that an offer of £12m will be enough to convince Atletico to sell.
Rodgers raided the Spanish top tier over the summer, although so far the moves have proved far from successful, with Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Aly Cissokho all failing to impress.
However, with the current window closing on Friday the club will need to work quickly to bring in new recruitment.
