Cole has emerged as a shock target for the Reds.
Chelsea defender Ashley Cole has struggled for playing time this season and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to end the 33-year-old’s misery, according to the Mirror.
The left-back’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer and it’s uncertain whether the Blues will offer the England international a new contract.
Due to injury concerns and a dip in form manager Jose Mourinho has preferred to use Cesar Azpilicueta on the left side of defence instead of Cole.
It means that the Englishman has been limited to 19 starts in all competitions this term, which is significantly lower than what the full-back is used to.
Rodgers is on the lookout for a new left-back with Jose Enrique having had fitness worries this campaign and on-loan Valencia star Aly Cissokho failing to really impress at Anfield.
The Reds boss knows Cole well from when the Northern Irishman was a coach in west London and it would be a sensational swoop if the 40-year-old could land the defensive ace.
Manchester United are thought to also be keeping tabs, whilst MLS side New York Red Bulls have been sniffing about as well, but Champions League football could sway the decision.
Mourinho meanwhile has already lined up a big money move for Southampton wonderkid Luke Shaw in the summer as a long-term replacement for Cole.
The 18-year-old has been impressing at St Mary’s for the past two years, is a self-confessed Chelsea fan and is highly likely to be open to a move there.
