Borussia Dortmund have signed reported Liverpool target Henrikh Mkhitaryan. We consider four possible alternatives to the Armenian for the Anfield club…
Christian Eriksen
The most obvious choice has to be Christian Eriksen. The player has been touted as Liverpool’s top transfer target since the back end of last season, until reported interest in Mkhitaryan took centre stage.
Interestingly, media talk of Eriksen moving to Liverpool only cooled when he was repeatedly linked with Borussia Dortmund. Now the Germans have signed Mkhitaryan (to the delight of all English commentators), Liverpool’s pursuit of the Danish 21-year-old could be far smoother.
The Ajax man is technically very good, and would fit perfectly in Brendan Rodger’s slick line-up. Marc Overmars said in March that no agreement had yet been stuck with Liverpool, but he also admitted that Eriksen would not be signing a new deal, as reported by The Daily Mail.
A Liverpool attack that included both Coutinho and Eriksen playing off a central striker would encourage Reds fans hugely, but we are yet to see if the club will follow up their interest with a concrete offer.
Here’s how the Red could line up if they snapped up the Danish sensation:
