Man City are also thought to be interested in Gaitan.
Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan is a transfer target for both Manchester City and Manchester United, but it’s Liverpool who are favourites to secure the South American for £20m, according to footylatest.com.
The 26-year-old has been with the Portuguese champions for four years after a £7m move from Boca Juniors back in the summer of 2010.
Since then Gaitan has been greatly impressing and his creativity in and around opposition defences makes the Argentina international a highly coveted figure in European football.
With the Reds having returned to the Champions League after a five year absence this campaign manager Brendan Rodgers has realised he needs a bigger squad at Anfield.
Although their core of attackers has helped the Merseysiders to almost win their first ever Premier League title, playing in Europe will be an added strain on their resources.
Currently Raheem Sterling is the only recognised winger at the club in any sort of form, with the on-loan Victor Moses unlikely to be retained after a disappointing year under Rodgers’ guidance.
Youngster Suso – who has spent the year on-loan with Almeria – has been impressing in La Liga and could well be brought back into the first team, but relying solely on such an unproven star could prove costly.
Gaitan primarily plays on the left wing, but can also operate as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers and this versatility will appeal to Rodgers’ style of switching tactics at will.
