Brendan Rodgers wants Abel Hernandez to ease Daniel Sturridge’s goal burden…
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has earmarked Palermo forward Abel Hernandez as a top transfer target when the January transfer window opens, reports the Express.
The forward is expected to be available for around £4m.
The Uruguayan international is currently plying his trade in Serie B, following his side’s shock relegation last season, and he’s started well, bagging four goals in his opening five games.
Because his club aren’t playing in a top league, Rodgers reckons Hernandez, a former Arsenal target, is a realistic target for January.
After sending Fabio Borini on loan to Sunderland, the Reds only have Daniel Sturridge and the currently suspended Luis Suarez as genuine, established centre-forward options, and an injury to either one of them could curtail their top four chances.
Hernandez would relish the chance to team up with international compatriot Suarez ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, and would hopefully ease the goalscoring burden from Sturridge.
The 23-year-old actually has a pretty poor goalscoring record when you consider the calibre of clubs interested in him. Although he’s scored seven in ten games for his country, Hernandez has only scored 22 goals in all competitions in five seasons for Palermo.
