Reds could snap up talented Barca fullback in January…
Liverpool have again been linked with Barcelona’s Spanish right-back Martin Montoya, after his agent admitted anything could happen, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The 22-year-old struggles for game time at the Nou Camp behind the brilliant Dani Alves, but is another highly regarded product of La Masia academy. He did make 24 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions last term, and has made 21 appearances for the impressive Spanish Under-21 side, too.
With Liverpool and England first-choice right-back Glen Johnson potentially out for ten weeks, the Reds could ideally do with strengthening the position now, but will have to wait until the January transfer window opens.
Montoya’s agent Jose Maria Orobitg said that his client is unlikely to extend his stay at the Nou Camp, which will alert a host of European clubs of the fullbacks availability.
“The transfer window is closed, but I can tell you that the contract extension may not be successful,” he said.
“In the past, Inter Milan, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, Dortmund and Liverpool were interested. Anything could happen between now and June.”
Liverpool brought in a host of defenders during the summer transfer window, including Kolo Toure on a free transfer, and impressive duo Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for a combined fee of around £25m. These players are predominantly centre-half options though, and Montoya would challenge 29-year-old Johnson for the starting right-back berth.
It’s quite possible that the side who currently top the Premier League will move for Montoya come January.
