3) Christian Poulsen
This one’s arguably even weirder. In 2010, Roy Hodgson decided to loan £18m midfielder Alberto Aquilani to Juventus, but then paid the Italian side £5m for the ageing and immobile midfielder Christian Poulsen. So in short, he gave a club £5m, and an Italian international, in exchange for a player who was way, way past it. Predictably, Poulsen flopped – leaving Liverpool fans bemused and confused.
