Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool match report & video highlights: Reds miss out on top four and Champions League
The Liverpool Reds made a £7 million bid to Inter Milan for star Mateo Kovačić, but the Serie A club has turned down the offer and reportedly wants more than double that amount to let him transfer.
According to the Metro, Inter Milan is seeking as much as £16 million to part ways with the star midfielder. With longtime midfielder and captain Steven Gerrard only two games away from retirement, the Reds will be eager to find a suitable replacement – especially with the club in a distant fifth place in the Premier League standings, well out of reach of Champions League qualification.
But the Metro noted that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is quite the fan of Kovačić and may acquiesce in the end.
The 21-year-old Croatian Kovačić is currently in his third season with Inter Milan and has put together an impressive season with 5 goals and two assists in 31 appearances. Though it hasn’t been enough to put Inter Milan over the top – they rank 8th in Serie A – Kovačić’s combination of youth and potential could give the Liverpool Reds a rising star who can keep the middle of the field secure and reduce the defensive mistakes that plagued the club all season.
