Liverpool have enjoyed a brilliant Premier League campaign, but with Champions League football all but guaranteed next term, manager Brendan Rodgers knows he’ll have to improve his relatively thin squad.
In central midfield, the Reds have five players (Gerrard, Coutinho, Allen, Lucas and Henderson) competing for three positions, and it’s likely that at least one addition will be made in this position as a result.
Here’s five central midfielders Liverpool could move for…
5) Mohamed Diame – West Ham (Sky Sports)
The Senegalese midfield battler would hardly be the signing to get the Anfield crowd excited, but the player himself has recently claimed he’s interested in the possible transfer.
“Liverpool? I can’t tell you if I will be a Liverpool player next season. But I think my name is still on their wanted list,” said the 26-year-old.
“I don’t hide it, I’m ambitious and I want to join a top-six side. I am 26 years old and it’s time to take that step.”
Diame is physically exceptional, and has the ability to run through the centre of the park, thanks to his sheer ferocity rather than any particular technical ability.
As a dynamic bench option, Diame could be effective for Liverpool, when he can take advantage of opposition tired legs.
