34-year-old Gerrard is considered past it by many, and even Liverpool fans are now beginning to question his ability to compete at the highest level.
The Merseyside club seem to have kept faith with their talismanic midfielder however, and have finally offered him an extension on his current deal.
The new deal is believed to contain a slight pay-cut, which may lead Gerrard to question his position.
Having recently retired from international duty the one club warrior may also wish to ply his trade abroad before finishing his career.
Rodgers will no doubt be hoping he signs a new deal, but is aware that his captain his some thinking to do before putting pen to paper.
“Firstly in terms of the club the latest is that Steven Gerrard and his representatives have been offered a contract here and at this moment in time that’s where it’s at,” said Rodgers.
“For Steven, everything he’s done in the period of time he’s been here, for 16 years, is a man who deserves utmost respect and time to consider that. It’s not just a big move in his life in terms of commitment but needs time and respect to look at that.
“It certainly won’t be money. I’ve spoken to him enough times at length and that won’t be the case. Between now and the end of the season he deserves the opportunity to think.”
