The manager likes an attacking brand of football to be played at Anfield whichinvolves his full-backs breaking forward at every available opportunity.

Both Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan are good at this and whilst the defensive capabilities of the former are in doubt, Rodgers is likely to stick with the England international.

Flanagan meanwhile played much of the last campaign at left-back, but support is needed there and both Chelsea’s Ashley Cole (Mirror) and Alberto Moreno of Sevilla (Guardian) are billed as ideal candidates.
