With Liverpool eager to make some kind of big splash in the transfer period, the club might be prepared to make a major bid for Aston Villa ace Christian Benteke.
According to the Metro, Liverpool legend Ray Houghton believes Benteke is the key target for the Reds this summer.
“I’ve heard Benteke is one of their major priorities in the summer, he is the one they are looking to sign,” Houghton told Talksport. “Benteke would fit into Liverpool’s style. He’s big and physical and he’s something Liverpool haven’t got at the moment.
“He can upset defenders, he’s got genuine pace and, when you get him in the right frame of mind, he can score goals… That’s something Liverpool have been missing.”
The 24-year-old Belgian attacker is coming off his 3rd straight season with 10 goals or more and helped Aston Villa – one of the worst club in the Premier League last season – upset Liverpool to reach the FA Cup Final this past year. Benteke was the Premier League Player of the Month in April 2015 after recording two goals in a win against Everton.
Though Benteke has a £32.5 million release clause in his contract, Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood appears determined to make the best effort possible to keep his ace at Villa Park. Benteke has also maintained that it is possible for him to stay if he can reach a new deal with the club.
